Ruthanne Tudball Ruthanne's work is mostly stoneware with some porcelain, slip-decorated, once-fired and soda vapour glazed in a wood/gas fired kiln. Drawing inspiration from the rhythmical movement of the earth (tide patterns, rock formations, water, etc.) and from the human body, her main concern is with the clay and the pleasure of manipulating it during throwing. She tries to make forms that capture the soft plasticity of the material and have both dignity and a lively freshness. Soda glazing can have dramatic effects on the surfaces of the pots, emphasising the making process and path of the flames across the work, making each pot unique. 'We are essentially defined by what we do, and what we as potters do with clay reflects who we are. I see my work as an active participation in a way of life that is celebrating the beauty of the world around me and the rhythms of the creative forces of the earth. It is my greatest hope that users of my pots will, in some small way, share the joy of this participation.'
